A lawsuit by environmental NGOs to block Cooke Aquaculture's plans to farm trout in Washington State took a step forward Thursday when a superior court judge heard testimony on the case, which has implications for the Canadian seafood giant's plans to keep farming salmonids in the area.

Washington state King County Superior Court Judge Johanna Bender heard testimony via video conference from attorney Emma Bruden, who is representing the opposition groups, which include Friends of the Earth, Wild Fish Conservancy, the Center for Biological Diversity and the Center for Food Safety.
