Norway-based salmon farming giant Mowi reached a milestone in its Canada salmon farming operations this month, with all of the sites achieving Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification.

But that milestone is being criticized by the Canadian environmental nonprofit Sea Choice, which countered ASC allowed a "loophole" for Mowi that leaves out up to 14 months of the company's production cycle.

The nonprofit says that since 2015, at least six interim smolt farms have never been assessed against the standards.
