Infectious pancreatic necrosis (IPN) has long been a major headache for the aquaculture industry, but has been sharply reduced since gene markers (QTL) were deployed 10 years ago to produce IPN-resistant farmed salmon.

In recent years, Norway's Veterinary Institute has collected samples analyzing the genetic material in the IPN virus and compared it with viruses found in samples taken around 2005 to 2006.
