An estimated 28 animal activists associated with the environmental protest group Extinction Rebellion have been arrested for protesting at UK's biggest fish market in Billingsgate, East London, reports The Guardian.

The incident at Billingsgate was part of a larger protest against climate change.

Around 200 members of Extinction Rebellion's Animal Rebellion chapter blocked the entrance to the fish market.

According to the group, they requested a dialogue which management refused.

“At London’s Billingsgate market, thousands of fish, stolen daily from their ocean homes, lie dead or dying," Animal Rebellion spokesperson Kerri Waters said. "Many will have suffocated slowly when pulled aboard fishing vessels, whilst thousands of others remain alive as they’re transported by lorry to the market, where they’ll be gutted or boiled alive.”
