Launched 12 years ago as a project operated by the Japan Fisheries Association, the Marine Eco-Label (MEL) is experiencing a pique in interest as the Tokyo Olympics draws near.

The label was originally set up as a certification scheme aimed at supporting seafood producers taking proactive measures to manage fishery resources and conserve marine ecosystems, but it has taken on a life of its own, with buy-in from processors and distributors, leading to the forming of the MEL Council in late 2016.
