Norwegian salmon farming company Grieg Seafood is extending a hand to a recent visitor to the company's British Columbia operations: former TV star Pamela Anderson.
It's the company's mission and responsibility to ensure it lives "side by side" with wild salmon, Grieg Communications Manager Kristina Furnes told IntraFish sister publication Fiskeribladet inreaction to recent protests by Anderson and NGO Sea Shepherd.
"This means that we need to be able to control salmon lice and to avoid escapes in the countries where farmed salmon can mix genetically with wild salmon, which we work with in all regions where we farm salmon," she said.
Grieg is involved in several wild salmon preservation initiatives, Furnes noted.
While Grieg's production manager was present when the Sea Shepherd arrived to answer questions, Furnes noted the film team "was most interested in filming Pamela Anderson at the facility."
Grieg encourages interested parties to visit, including groups like Sea Shepherd, Furnes noted, but a visit planned outside of the company increases risks for escape, disease transmission and is a safety hazard.
