US agricultural giant Cargill said Wednesday the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has deregulated its plant-based fish oil alternative providing long chain omega-3 fatty acids for aquafeed under the "Latitude" trademark.

The deregulation means the company is on schedule to begin commercial production of the genetically modified (GM) canola oil in Montana, where it has been working with farmers for several years in small trial projects, Willie Loh, vice president of market development for edible oils at Cargill, told IntraFish.
