Last week, buyers at Walmart and Whole Foods gave a stark warning at the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute's (ASMI) annual meeting: Seafood is hitting an inflation ceiling at retail.

It's not unlike other signs from around the world that consumers simply don't have the ability or desire to splash out cash on "nice to have" food items.

Some segments are doing better than others, and it seems retailers are seeing the benefits of value-added items, which can still meet a price point for consumers while showcasing convenience. Still, it's a time for the industry to worry.
