US-based The Plant Based Seafood Company announced Thursday that it has signed deals with seafood distristbution giants Sysco and US Foods for sales of its Mind Blown branded crab cakes.

Its plant-based crab cakes are now available in Riverside, California, through Sysco, and in the Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia metro areas through US Foods.

Additionally, Fancy Foods, a New York-based distributor of organic and all-natural protein products, is selling the product in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

In July, Mind Blown crab cakes, dusted shrimp, and scallops were picked up by US retailer Sprouts Farmers Market, marking the brand’s first national distribution.

The Plant Based Seafood Company was created in 2020 when Virginia-based Van Cleve Seafood spun off its plant-based product line into a separate company.

Investments in alternative seafood products nearly doubled in 2021 over levels the year before, according to Good Food Institute.

A total of $175 million (€162 million) was invested in companies producing or planning to produce seafood made from plant material, grown from cells or produced using a fermentation process. The investment reflects a 92 percent increase from the $91 million (€84.3 million) invested in the sector in 2020.

Many major seafood producers, including Bumble Bee and Thai Union, are adding plant-based seafood alternatives to their portfolios.
