US President Joe Biden is supporting a bipartisan effort in the US Congress to combat illegal, unregulated, and unreported (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses in the seafood supply chain.

In June, as part of a memorandum on the issue, Biden ordered the administrator of NOAA to initiate a rule making process to expand the Seafood Import Monitoring Program (SIMP) to include additional species and species groups.

SIMP took effect in 2018 and established reporting and record-keeping requirements for imports of certain seafood products to prevent illegal, unreported and unregulated and/or misrepresented seafood from entering the US market.
