Trident Seafoods will again not operate its salmon processing plant in Wrangell, Alaska, this coming season, following a closure of the plant in 2021.
As in the past two years, the company cited weak chum salmon returns for its decision not to run the plant, reported the Cordova Times.
Trident has said it would need returns of more than 12 million fish to make it economically viable to run the plant.
Last year’s commercial harvest was 7.4 million chum, with the department projecting 8.4 million this year, according to Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
The past few years have proven to be tough for many Alaska salmon processors. The company will continue operations out of its Ketchikan and Petersburg plants.
