The first flymeal protein production plant in Latin America opens this week in western Ecuador as part a $2.5 million (€2.2 million) investment by Bioconversión.

The plant, situated in an economic development zone near the coast of Guayaquil, will produce flymeal for use in animal feed and soil fertilizer.

The project is part of an alliance with Guayaquil's Espol University and has undergone succesful piloting trials in recent years.

With flymeal capable of being used as a fishmeal substitute, developments are being monitored by Ecuador's shrimp producers who overtook India as the world's leading shrimp exporters in 2020.
