Norwegian salmon farmer Nordlaks, the country's seventh-largest producer, has named Bernt Ola Nilsen as it new CFO.

Nilsen currently works at Norwegian bank Sparebank 1 Nord-Norge, where he has been manager for the corporate market in the Lofoten and Vesteralen region since 2020.

Nilsen begins at Nordlaks in the new year, taking over from Roger Mosand.

Nilsen joins the executive management team and will report to Nordlaks CEO Eirik Welde.

Nordlaks faced a series of challenges in 2021.

Earlier this year, Norway's Director of Fisheries ruled that 13 developmental aquaculture permits being used by Nordlaks at its offshore Havfarm 1 cannot be converted into permanent farming permits, placing the project in jeopardy.

In March, the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries imposed an NOK 799,000 (€79,000/$94,000) penalty against Norway's seventh largest salmon producer for not holding a facility certificate for three of its locations during a short period in 2019.

Nordlaks said the time-consuming process to obtain the certificates was put on the back-burner in 2019 when the company was overwhelmed with an algal bloom crisis.
