One of the world's wealthiest individuals -- coming in at 198th on the Forbes' billionaires list -- has made his first investment in salmon farming, opting for the fledgling land-based project Gaia Salmon.

Olav Thon, the 98-year-old self-made real estate mogul with an estimated net worth of $6 billion (€5 billion), injected a meager NOK 2 million ($230,000/€200,000) into the project, one of dozens of other planned land-based salmon farming developments.

"I see the company will solve some of the challenges the salmon farming industry faces," Thon said.
