Faroese salmon farming giant Bakkafrost is taking to the skies on its own cargo plane in an effort to skip the logistical hurdles in delivering its fish to the booming US market.
With the US market paying "by far" the highest per kilo price per salmon, margins have been undercut by soaring airfreight costs, which are now double the price of the pre-pandemic levels.
In its quest for faster, more efficient and more environmentally friendly ways to move its product to buyers, the company landed on a simple solution: own its own airplane.
