By 2030 offshore production could account for up to 10 percent of global farmed salmon production -- but significant hurdles remain for the emerging sector to reach its massive potential, experts say.

In a bullish new report on fish farming beyond coastal waters, analysts at Rabobank estimate as much as 10 percent of farmed salmon output could come from offshore systems, spanning from 100,000 metric tons at the low end to upwards of 300,000 metric tons if the lender's higher-end forecast comes to fruition.
