Whole Oceans remains optimistic about its ability to produce land-based salmon at a large scale at its recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) in Maine, despite only smaller-scale models proving successful so far.

The company is currently permitted to produce 20,000 metric tons of fish at its RAS site in Bucksport, Maine, once the project is approved and operating, but since the process began for the operation, Whole Oceans' parent Emergent Holdings invested in the much smaller scale Kuterra land-based salmon operation in British Columbia.
