Thanks to help from developers at SAP, Bumble Bee is using a blockchain to provide transparency in its tuna supply chain all the way from the pole-and-line-catch fishermen sailing the South Pacific to US grocery stores.

Cargill, meanwhile, committed a team of engineers to work with Intel and enterprise blockchain startup Bitwise to help build Hyperledger Grid, which will track food back to its source.

With assistance from industry consultants and other experts, Forbes' team of reporters and editors identified more than 100 big companies actively exploring blockchain through industry consortia and other proprietary projects. The new list features 50—with minimum revenues or valuations of $1 billion (€884 million), and US operations— that are currently leading the way in adapting decentralized ledgers to their operating needs.
