When NOAA Fisheries published a new final rule on the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA) last week, global aquaculture companies had to suddenly turn their attention to the nearly 200-page document and begin figuring out how it might affect their ability to export product to the US market.

That's because foreign aquaculture operations, for the first time, will need to prove they have policies in place that are comparable with MMPA regulations US harvesters must follow for protecting marine mammals.

Nations exporting wild and farmed seafood to the United States will, per the final rule, have to meet fishing standards for protecting marine mammals equal to those American fishermen follow.
