The final MSC certification report for the Fraser River sockeye fishery includes 17 conditions for improving the status of the fishery. Some of those conditions must be met within the first year, while others have a timeline of the full five years of certification.

Earlier this month, three other B.C. sockeye fisheries -- the Nass, Skeena and Barkley -- earned MSC certification.

The Fraser River fishery, using all three gear types, has a widely variable catch. Christina Burridge, secretary of the Canadian Pacific Sustainable Fisheries Society, told IntraFish projections this year are for a harvest of around 5,000-8,000 metric tons between the Nass, Skeena, Barkley and Fraser rivers.
