Since its inception in 2014, the Fair Trade Seafood Program has certified over 6,000 fishermen and workers against the Capture Fisheries Standard. Today more than 20 North American retailers carry the Fair Trade seal, including Whole Foods Market, Safeway, New Seasons, and Hy-Vee.

Julie Kuchepatov, seafood director at Fair Trade USA, told IntraFish the nonprofit is seeing strong demand for its label in the United States.

"The Fair Trade seal has 63 percent consumer recognition in the United States, and both consumers and industry buyers are paying more attention to social responsibility and livelihood issues,” she said.
