Indian shrimp producers spy opportunity in US-China trade war

India’s seafood products are likely to have a competitive edge in the US market, thanks to the imposition of an additional tariff of 25 percent on Chinese imports.

“The new decision will definitely be problematic for China," a leading Kochi seafood exporter told BusinessLine.

"Initially, they could absorb the 10 percent duty. But the recent tariff hike will not be very pleasant.”

“We have a dominant position in the shrimp market in the US and this advantage can be fully exploited to garner a significant share in value-added seafood products, where China is very strong due to factors such as cost competitiveness, larger volumes, low labor cost etc.,” the exporter said.
