Fishermen of the coastal district of Rameswaram, in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, are set to strike from July 14 following a ban imposed by Sri Lanka on bottom trawling, reports The News Minute.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edapaddi Palanisamy urged India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pressure Sri Lanka against an amendment passed to the new ban, which imposes a fine of INR 20,000 (€271.70/$309.80) and two years of imprisonment for violators.

“Central government is lethargic and they are not mindful about the needs of the fishermen, so the Sri Lankan government is imposing such laws,” said Bose, state secretary of the Tamil Nadu Meenavar Sangam.
