Mitsubishi-owned canned seafood giant Princes is pledging to reduce its yellowfin tuna sourcing in the Indian Ocean by 50 percent - more than 16,000 metric tons - by 2022.

The stock has been overfished since 2015 and requires urgent action to reverse this trend, said the group.

Princes has been working to develop alternative sources of yellowfin since 2017 and has already achieved a 40 percent reduction, meaning that its usage of Indian Ocean yellowfin currently accounts for less than 5 percent of the total Indian Ocean catch.
