The South African hake fishery retained certification from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) after a one-year-long re-assessment process, a move deemed vital for the fishery's international competitiveness.

The certification was granted for an additional five-year period, following an objection to the recertification in January being accepted by an independent adjudicator, pushing back the process for a period.
