Mexico already exceeded its bluefin tuna catch limits for 2018 before the first half of the season is over, NGO Pew said.

In September 2017, countries finally agreed to a rebuilding plan for the species, but on May 3, Mexico announced it had exceeded its fishing limits, while Japan is at risk of exceeding its quota as well.

“This marks yet another year of overages for a species that continues to suffer from rampant overfishing,” said Jamie Gibbon, an officer on NGO Pew’s global tuna conservation campaign.
