Overall fish production in India increased more than 10 percent in volume in 2018 compared to the year prior, according to the latest governmental data.

Volumes reached 12.6 million metric tons last year, with aquaculture accounting for much of the growth, the Hindu Business Line reported.

Minister of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries Giriraj Singh said the government is planning to increase marine exports to INR 1 trillion ($14 billion) over the next five years.

Aquaculture production grew 14 percent while marine fisheries production grew only 1.73 percent during the period.

Andhra Pradesh topped other states, producing 3.45 million metric tons of fish, followed by West Bengal with 2.85 million metric tons of fish.
