Indonesian IUU crackdown banishes 10,000 vessels

The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti defended her case at a press conference in Jakarta.

Continuing a crackdown on illegal fishing that began in 2015, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Minister Susi Pudjiastuti claimed that roughly 10,000 foreign vessels have been turned away from Indonesian waters, reported the Jakarta Post.

Pudjiastuti also implemented a strict policy of sinking vessels caught illegally fishing. Nearly 500 vessels have been caught and destroyed through this policy.

She denied claims that this policy has stagnated the Indonesian fisheries industry, stating that rather it has increased the country's GDP which, according to Pidjiastuti, grew 5.7 percent in the first quarter of 2019.
