EU Parliament votes to re-introduce €6 billion fishing fund subsidies

The fund would help finance the renewal of the EU fishing fleet.

The European Parliament voted to re-introduce subsidies worth €6 billion in the post-2020 fund for the maritime and fisheries sector (EMFF).

The subsidies would help finance the renewal of the EU fishing fleet with new fishing vessels and the modernization of older ones to increase the EU fleet’s capacity.

The European Union prohibited subsidies to construct new fishing vessels in 2004 to reduce fishing effort.

The decision to re-introduce subsidies is opposed by NGOs such as the WWF, which considers it a “immense step backwards," and a “violation of the EU’s international commitments to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal on the oceans.”
