EU fishing industry calls for effective implementation of protection laws at sea

Stakeholders say fishing is still a hazardous activity due to the lack of law enforcement.

European representatives of the fisheries sector including NGOs and United Nations (UN) agencies gathered in the Netherlands during the Committee of Fisheries of (COFI) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to discuss social issues in the sector.

All parties concluded that governments give insufficient attention to the implementation of essential principles of international law for the protection of fishers, making fishing still a hazardous activity.

Participants widely called for the development of an effective roadmap for the rapid worldwide implementation of the international agreements relating to work and safety in the fishing sector.
