Alaskan Leader waves the US flag

Keith Singleton, president of the value-added division of Alaskan Leader Seafood, says the company's seven-year effort to develop a retail brand for its hook-and-line cod is finally starting to pay dividends, particularly in a time when "Buy American" has become a big sales hook.

"Anything you can put an American flag on, the US consumer wants," Singleton said.

The retail segment poses new challenges for the company, and isn't for the weak-kneed.

"Once you get started, there's no turning back -- packaging, graphics, focus groups -- you can't to it halfway," he said.

Alaska Leader's products won their first big boost with a listing in Costco, but more retailers have taken the product on, and more listings are in the pipeline.

PezCo diversifies into frozen

Colombian tilapia producer PezCo has been benefiting from the turn away from Chinese frozen tilapia imports into the US by selling fresh, and by highlighting their Latin American origin.

"We have an opportunity to position ourselves and the Colombian brand as a premium frozen supplier in the same way we've done as fresh," CEO Luis-Ignacio Libreros and COO Juan-Carlos Libreros told IntraFish.

Trade wars and the ongoing negative press on tilapia in the US market has given PezCo and opening, the executives said, where they can play on both their sustainable certifications, as well as the price point frozen offers.
