The Brussels seafood show scheduled for late April has been postponed over coronavirus concerns, Diversified Communications, the organizer of the event, said.

The company said the event, which was scheduled for April 21-23, would be rescheduled for a later date in 2020. An announcement of the new date will be made March 18, Diversified said.

Earlier in the day, Belgium Prime Minister Sophie Wilmes said the government was recommending that indoor gatherings of more than 1,000 people should be cancelled or postponed, which factored into the decision, the company said.

On March 3, under pressure from exhibitors and attendees, Diversified postponed its Seafood Expo North America -- aka the Boston seafood show -- scheduled for Boston next week. The show organizers said they expect to make a decision by mid-April on whether to hold the event at another time or whether to cancel it altogether.

More than 29,100 buyers, suppliers, media, and other seafood professionals from more than 150 countries visit the Brussels seafood show each year to meet with suppliers, source new products and network with other industry professionals.

This, the 28th edition of the exposition, will be the last to be held in the Belgian capital, with a move announced last year to relocate the show to Barcelona, Spain.
