Ex Troutlodge Isle of Man MD Roy Charsley went it alone in 2012, launching South Africa’s biggest trout hatchery in the northeastern Highlands.

Producing 60 million eggs during the South African winter, Dunkeld Trout Hatcheries, is looking to expand production year-round, with investment in a second RAS system designed to produce in the warmer South African summer.

Its biggest challenge has been the cost of importing feed – which it gets from Coppens in The Netherlands – with an unfavorable exchange rate, but with export markets in Iran and Russia, Charsley says the difference is pretty much recouped.

The farm’s investment comes from South African travel and leisure company Go Touch Down.
