The impact salmon lice have on wild salmon will decide the fate of farmed salmon production growth under Norway's new "traffic light" salmon growth regime.

The new rules, which came into force Oct. 15, divide the Norwegian coast into 13 production areas, placing restrictions on production growth based on wild salmon mortality from lice in the respective areas.

Since the entire area is measured, all companies in each area can face restrictions -- a "red light" -- if the total exceeds 30 percent mortality.
