A major Maltese tuna farm operator was temporarily shut down last month after it was caught using a type of feed thought to cause "sea slime," which has been affecting large stretches of the island's coastline, reports The Times of Malta.

Mare Blu Tuna Farm was fined and had its operation suspended for a week after a routine inspection found a consignment of bait fish feed that had not been properly thawed, sources within the environmental regulator said.

Mare Blu was formed in 2006 from a merger between Mare Blu Trading Co. Ltd and Spain's Group Fuentes.
