Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans's (DFO) much-anticipated 64-page report looking at four production systems for farmed salmon in British Columbia found a move to solely land-based systems by 2025 would likely not be feasible.

Now, the challenge, according to Timothy Kennedy, president and CEO of the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA), is whether Canada's salmon farmers can receive the support they need to move to new aquaculture technologies such as hybrid recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), where salmon can grow longer on land until they are put into netpens in the ocean.
