The majority of fishmeal is produced from wild fish that have no contact with antibiotics, nor are antibiotics used in the manufacturing process, a trade group representing the fishmeal industry said Wednesday in response to a new report linking fishmeal to spread of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARG).

Researchers at Dalian University of Technology in China said fishmeal, used largely to feed farmed fish, was promoting “antibiotic-resistant gene (ARG) dissemination internationally.”
