Research into sea-lice resistant eggs developed by aquaculture genetics company Benchmark has been shortlisted for the 2018 Newton Prize, which recognizes research and innovation in support of economic development and social welfare.

Benchmark is using genetic markers to select fish that are resistant to sea lice species existing in Norway and Chile, and is studying the possibility of developing this technique to select fish resistant to Salmon Rickettsial Septicaemia (SRS), the main reason for antibiotic use in the Chilean salmon industry.
