Farmed Atlantic salmon from British Columbia has finally escaped from the doldrums of the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch red list and now joins the NGO’s yellow, or Good Alternative, list, a move that is likely to anger anti-salmon-farming activists in western Canada but please the industry.

The upgrade makes BC the first major open-water net pen salmon farming region in the world to transition out of the Seafood Watch red, or Avoid, category. Chile, Norway and Scotland, major salmon-farming nations, remain on the NGO’s red list, according to new recommendations released by Seafood Watch on Monday.
