Tasmanian salmon farmer Tassal has applied for a research permit to trial a new method of keeping seals away for their fish pens. The strategy involves spraying them with a "low-pressure" water stream reported ABC News.

But the application has been met with concerns about animal welfare.

According to the official application, the stream would be used on seals that approach employees, vessels or pens.

"This is still a noxious deterrent that has potential to injure seals," the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) Chief Executive Andrew Byrne said.
