Alternative ingredients in aquaculture feed have seen exciting developments in recent years, with creative new players, enthusiastic investment and significant breakthroughs.

There is a raft of alternatives to marine ingredients that are showing potential and will hopefully one day offer viable economics and scale to supplement ingredients such as fishmeal and oil, which are produced from wild fish and offer limited opportunity for production growth.

Developments have inevitably attracted downstream interest among retailers, but if the story is going to start being widely told in a consumer environment, then a careful line must be trodden. There is broader messaging towards the promotion of greater fish consumption to protect and a key issue of available volumes.
