Land-based salmon farmer Whole Oceans has hired an archaeological expert to assess its potential farm site in Bucksport, Maine, reported Wabi 5.

According to Bucksport Town Manager Susan Lessard, the company made the hire after concerns were voiced by a local historian who believed archaeological remains may be disturbed by the development.

Whole Oceans is cooperating fully with the Maine Historic Preservation Commission's request to conduct a historic site review and will be submitting the report to the state with the intention of complying fully with recommendations, said Whole Oceans CEO Jacob Bartlett.

The company is hoping to break ground on the new salmon farm by the end of the year.
