Chile’s Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca) announced it would reduce the number of stocking permits beleagured salmon company Nova Austral can hold for its sites, reversing an earlier allowance that would have otherwise allowed the company to expand in the Magallenes region.

On Wednesday Subpesca issued a notice stating it would "invalidate"an earlier ruling that allowed the company to stock higher densities in the Magallenes region in southern Chile, citing the company's inadequate handling of mortalities and waste.

The troubled company has seen several repercussions since misreporting fish mortalities earlier this year, including an Aquaculture Stewardship Council's (ASC) decision to suspend its logo contract with the company.

Earlier this month the company significantly lowered its production guidance for 2020 due to its ongoing legal disputes in the Beagle Channel, high levels of mortality in 2018 and the first half of 2019, and delays in stocking.
