With the Alaska salmon season barreling down, industry watchers say the season will be -- predictably -- wild.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) is predicting a sharp drop of 40 percent in the overall catch largely because of the cyclical decline in pink salmon returns this year, but even with the lower harvests, some in the sector are optimistic about the upcoming year.

"Most of us feeling significantly better right now than the same point in time last year," Norm Van Vactor, president and CEO of Alaska community development quota (CDQ) group the Bristol Bay Economic Development Corporation (BBEDC), which owns 50 percent of Ocean Beauty, told IntraFish.
