Chilean authorities said a new algae bloom -- Alexandrium Catenella -- was detected in Chile’s Region X. The algae produces a seafood paralyzing toxin affecting clams and mussels fisheries in Los Lagos.

According to the Scientific Advisory Committee of Chile, the bloom is still in its growing phase and is expected to increase both in intensity and range in the coming weeks.

Speaking to IntraFish, a spokesperson for the fisheries department of Chile's Undersecretary of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Subpesca), said it is different to the Chattonella algae bloom, which started at the end of February, killing 106,000 metric tons of salmon.
