A European Union (EU) funded project aims to develop and enhance the sustainability of the scampi fishery.

Called 'Nephrops,' the project will look at developing hatchery and ranching technology and enhancing the survival of discards for nephrops norvegicus, small shrimp more commonly known as scampi.

Researchers at the UK-based University of Hull’s Scarborough campus are key partners in the project.

According to Claire Mulley of Hull University, the €2.4 million ($3.05million) project led by NUIG Galway in Ireland, and the Scottish Orkney Fisheries Association, brings together expertise from the fishing industry, technologists and academia from across Europe and aims to explore potential for enhancing the sustainability of inshore fisheries.

After capture by trawl or creel, undersized scampi (often as much as 45 percent of the catch) may be thrown back and it is estimated that 75 percent of discards from trawl fishing may die.
