Captain D's names its seafood 'Supplier of the Year'

The fast-food chain is one of the seafood firm's largest customers.

Captain D's named Southstream Seafoods its Supplier of the Year at its biennial conference Sunday, Southstream President Mark Soderstrom told IntraFish.

"It was quite a nice award," he said. "We enjoy their business and they enjoy our fish."

Southstream is Captain D's largest supplier on both its dusted pollock portion and its flounder, he said. He declined to name the amount his company supplies to Captain D's of each item, simply stating "it's a lot."

Southstream is a wholesaler and importer primarily of wild-caught species and represents I&J out of South Africa on cape hake and Thorfish out of Iceland on frozen-at-sea haddock, cod and saithe.

The company packs under the Frostmark and Midnight Sun brands, primarily on cod, haddock and twice-frozen Alaska pollock out of China.

"Our market tends to be broadline foodservice distributors," he said, adding that the company also does private label for companies such as US Foodservice. "We love doing business with [Captain D's], they have a great operation to do business with and they are one of our largest customers."
