Spain 'lagging behind' competitors on VAP, technology

The aquaculture and fishing industries face a number of challenges as they strive to be competitive with international players.

Spanish businesses related to the fishing and aquaculture sectors are facing a number of challenges such as digitalization and the implementation of energy-saving measures, which could render them less competitive than their international counterparts, reports La Opinion de la Coruna.

At an event organized by the Spanish Technological Platform of Fisheries and Aquaculture, Juan Manuel Vieites, general secretary of the Spanish Association of Seafood Canners, (Anfaco-Cecopesca) also said the sector needs to invest further in value-added production to adapt to consumers’ needs and be competitive among international processors.

Additionally, Javier Ojeda, the general manager of the Business Association of Aquaculture (Apromar) said Spain lags behind other producers due to the underdevelopment of digital infrastructures and the “fear” to take a risk and invest in new projects.
