Lidl US commits to selling sustainable seafood only

Just one year after opening in the US, the retailer has teamed with ASC, MSC, BAP.

Lidl US released a statement Wednesday, saying it has committed to selling only certified sustainable fresh and frozen seafood.

The retailer is partnering with the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), the Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC), and Best Aquaculture Practices (BAP) to ensure all of its seafood is either harvested sustainably or farmed in an environmentally-friendly manner.

"This is a tremendous step by Lidl to ensure that its entire core assortment of fresh and frozen seafood is third-party certified," said BAP Director of North American Development Chris Keller.

Lidl operates 10,000 stores in 27 countries across Europe, and first established its US operations in 2016.

Since then, the discount retail chain has stores and distribution centers around the Washington D.C. area.
