Chicken of the Sea, Bumble Bee, StarKist still low in Greenpeace tuna ranking

NGO's ranking fails Walmart, Target, Costco, SUPERVALU, Trader Joe’s, H-E-B.

Greenpeace launched its newest US canned tuna ranking based on how sustainable, ethical and fair tuna products are. The first came out in 2015.

Greenpeace USA found several retailers "made significant progress toward offering consumers more sustainable and ethical products." These retailers include Whole Foods, Hy-Vee, Wegmans, Giant Eagle, Albertsons, Aldi, Ahold Delhaize and Kroger.

But, "the three largest US brands -- Thai Union-owned Chicken of the Sea, Bumble Bee, and StarKist -- continue to hold the industry back from the sweeping changes that are desperately needed," said the NGO.

Chicken of the Sea is "ranked the highest of the three brands for its policy positions on sustainability and human rights, but the company must do more to show its suppliers are meeting those requirements."

After committing to selling only sustainable canned tuna nationwide by January 2018, Greenpeace added Whole Foods to the green category, which the NGO identified as the best canned tuna choices for American consumers. Already on this list are Wild Planet, American Tuna and Ocean Naturals.

"As Kroger launches more responsibility-caught canned tuna products, it could soon leave Walmart and Costco in the dust -- both retailers are failing to lead," said Greenpeace, adding Walmart, Target, Costco, Supervalu, Trader Joe’s and H-E-B failed this year's ranking ... with inadequate or nonexistent tuna policies and destructive products on store shelves."

However, "Supervalu shows promise with plans to improve its tuna policies and procurement."

“It’s unfortunate that tuna giants like Chicken of the Sea continue to talk a good game on sustainability and human rights, yet have not made the changes needed to shift a destructive industry," said Greenpeace USA Oceans Campaigner David Pinsky. "Chicken of the Sea can be the leader that says the status quo will no longer be tolerated, but it needs to act now.”

More than 80 percent of tuna sold in the US failed to meet basic sustainability standards with three major brands as the worst performers: Bumble Bee, Chicken of the Sea and StarKist, according to the report.
